BRUNO BRANDOLINO

LA BURLA is a choreographic fiction that follows two figures situated in an obscure and dystopic present. Invocations and rituals where the sacred and the profane mix to submerge and traverse the depths. Saints, witches, seers, devils, monsters, and heroines compose the imagery of this piece that wants to give body and voice to a varied medieval iconographic repertoire. La Burla is the result of a partnership between Bruno Brandolino (Uruguay)—direction and performance—and Bibi Dória (Brazil)—co-creation and performance—in collaboration with Leticia Skrycky (Urugay)—lighting design. The research in this piece mobilizes questions that correspond to both a choreographic thought and a fictional development. We ask ourselves: What are the possible relationships between choreography and fiction? In this sense, choreographic practices and procedures were built that allowed us to work with a specific iconographic repertoire and build fiction from its activation. This repertoire brings together images that span several centuries of visual production in the Middle Ages and discourse on religion, paganism, magic, clearly contrasting two worldviews: the official, dictated by the Church, and the unofficial, linked to pagan rites and popular festivals. In La Burla, we summon these bodies and subjects from distant historical times to reverberate in our contemporary bodies as a strategy to generate an ambiguous fiction, strongly expressive and absurd. — Bruno Brandolino

During 2020, La Burla was hosted by different artistic residencies -O Espaço do Tempo (Montemor-o-novo, Portugal), La Caldera (Barcelona, ​​Spain) and O Rumo do Fumo (Lisbon, Portugal) for the conception and development of a performative practice that investigates the relationship between choreography and fiction. The objective of this practice is the embodiment of a medieval iconographic repertoire composed of images of bodies and facial expressions from the grotesque universe. The practice consists of the execution and cyclic repetition of a score that places images from this repertoire in sequence. The cyclical nature of the practice makes it possible to revisit the images, insert them in space and take time to rewrite them over and over again in an endless and expansive process of transformation. In each cycle, the images gain dimension, becoming body, sound-body and action, gestures and initial expressions are transformed, enabling new meanings to be read.
