Anthropophagic Trilogy - Act III: To Occupy
Tamara Cubas
Uruguayan choreographer and visual artist Tamara Cubas presents a trilogy of stage productions/performance art pieces based on the concept of anthropophagy, making a nod to the Brazilian aesthetic and cultural movement that reinterpreted this concept in the 1920s to address the notion of post-colonial Brazilian identity, using the idea of the ritual practised by the Tupi people who defended themselves by devouring their enemies as well as the notion that digesting this ‘other’ led to the birth of a new and unpredictable being. Reflections on power, the collective, devices, desire and the figure of the ‘other’ run through Cubas’ work, in which she embarks on a deliberate intertextual exploration (appropriation, copying, contamination and recreation of works and ideas by other people). In this Trilogy, she ‘cannibalises’ three contemporary dance pieces that she admires, by three Brazilian creators. The resulting three pieces are the product of a relationship, a ‘digestion’ of the original works.
Following Permanecer and Resistir, a third verb in the infinitive form comprises the title of the last act in the Trilogía Antropofágica (Anthropophagic Trilogy): Avasallar (“To Occupy”). This piece features bodies and beings that seem to be in a constant stage of urgency, anxiety and almost savagery, calling into question a positivist view of progress.
